Early Childhood Curriculum

Cory’s been learning his ABCs and 123s for sure, but his preschool curriculum is more comprehensive than that. It includes science questioning, listening and speaking as well. Every Friday he brings in something that begins with the letter they are working on. To our surprise, Cory needed to turn in an All About Me project tomorrow. We never got a paper. Regardless, Jay got the poster board, I printed and cut out paper, and then we had Cory say the parts and find the words based on first letters. It was very short, and had me seeing flashes of the future of “Gee mom I got this project due tomorrow…”

Yesterday was a great start. Brittany is getting used to Blake’s cues and routines. We told Cory that Brittany is here for Blake, so he doesn’t feel like he’s being abandoned again. He didn’t really warm up to her very quickly. He even peed in her car on the way to preschool! He was so upset and hates being wet. I had to clean the car seat and there was a mess of things when I got him in the building to find a change of clothes (his weren’t labled or anywhere where they should have been) and get Brittany on the contact lists.
I’m slowly dumping responsibilities onto Brittany. Today she was here when I got Cory up and then I conveniently went to get a shower while she got him dressed and got him breakfast and made sure he went to the bathroom. He did fine with all of that. He of course refused to get out of the car when we got to preschool. I could force him, but she’s going to have to find what works to get him out and up in the building because physically won’t work while carrying a baby (I mean, the girl might weight 80 lbs).
I am able to pick up Cory this week while I catch up on some odds and ends (like ironing on labels to all of Cory’s clothes) and plan lessons. I’ll be headed into the school wed and fri to work with my third grade team so I can get plans done. I thought it would be a good wind down with only 10 weeks left of school, but man, there’s actually a lot to wrap up and get done. No one planned field trips, incubators, or end of year lessons. It’s going to be a lot of work to wrap things up.

Growing …FAST

This morning must have been oh- my- gosh -my -kids -are -growing day. Blake is talking up a storm and starting to wiggle enough he moves around some. Cory is getting his 6-7 year old molars. What a morning.

Cory was complaining yesterday that when he was eating breakfast, his mouth hurt. I checked all over and all I could figure was he scratched his gums and told him it’d get better soon. This morning he did the same thing for my mom. We looked in and after searching, sure enough, top and bottom behind his primary molars are swollen white lumps. I gave him some tylenol, poor guy. I’m sure they’re sore. Not sure if I should get a pediatric dentist or not.

Blake is just a growing so fast with his talking. What a charmer.

He’s starting to reach to roll over some. Still not lifting his head.

Tonight we’re going to have some friends over for a St. Patrick’s Day game. Hopefully the weather stays nice and we can go outside to find coins, rainbows, kettles of treasure, leprechauns and shamrocks that the leprechauns hid ;) We’re also going to have a traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage with potatoes and carrots for the grown ups and grilled cheese coins for the tots. I hope we have lots of fun.

Growing and Pains

Blake will be 3 months old tomorrow. It’s really hard to realize how quickly a year goes by. We’re still waiting for a call back from the neuro to see if he’ll need PT. He is still struggling to lift his head, but is rounding out and gaining more range of motion as he grows. He’s sleeping pretty consistently about 6 hours during the night and takes between 4 and 5 oz if he’s not nursing. Blake’s also starting to try some 4 hour shifts instead of 2.5 or 3. We’ve hired a nanny for the 10 weeks I’ll be back at school until summer. Her name is Brittany and she’s moving from NC. She seems wonderful and is going to also be working on an internship as a pastry chef at the Red Brick Bakery in Red Lion.
Cory is on his second ear infection (that I know of) for the season. Doctor says it’s not allergies, but a cold. He had two days off of school and just started back today. His new thing is going on an adventure with a map I drew for him. He watched Pooh’s Great Adventure and has been marching around the house following his map.
We had a 60th birthday dinner with Dzaidzi last night. I made two cakes because my dad and I like chocolate and Cory and Jay like white. Cory decorated the white cake with sprinkles and wanted to know why he wasn’t getting candles to blow out. He thinks every cake should be for HIS birthday. His will be soon enough. I fear we’re stuck in a Super Mario stage. We got him some Super Mario figures for Easter, but who knows if it’ll last long enough till his birthday till he’s in to something else.

ON or OFF

It seems there’s always something going around at day care. First it was all that flu and now we’re into colds. Cory has had a bit of a cough but he must have had a sour tummy from all his drainage and threw up all over the recliner and himself this morning. It’ll be a challenge to take care of him and Blake and keep clean in between.

Cory’s behaviors are on and off. Some days he has all 2s at school and others he brings home 0s for stomping feet and screaming no, taking toys, or running around crazy instead of doing what he’s asked. The other night he threw a crazy-bring-in-the-paddy-waggon tantrum of screaming and rolling on the floor at bed time because he lost his Wii Mario playing privillage. The next morning he was a perfect angle and got dressed by himself and went to school without a fuss. There’s no predicting his storms. Sleep and food would help, but he avoids both.

I’m anxiously awaiting summer when he can run around outside and work off some energy. I swear 3 year olds and manic patients have way too much in common.
