Naturally Inducing

So it turns out that  some women just can’t wait and want to have a baby sooner than later. If you body is close to labor anyway there are some things that have been known to naturally induce labor. Anything with a star is something that one should consult with a doctor first… but just thought the following was interesting:

  1. *Acupressure/Acupuncture – various points can start contractions. See acupressure for labor site for more information about inducing labor.
  2. *Nipple stimulation/breast pump – uses the mother’s own oxytocin to stimulate contractions; discontinue if contractions are prolonged or become intense.
  3. *Castor oil - often mixed with juice or food; this stimulates prostaglandins to contract the uterus (This can have an undesired affect of diarrhea for several hours so use with caution and consult with your doctor or midwife.) For more information, see this site at gentlebirth.org.
  4. Walking/changing positions frequently – this is one of the least invasive ways to stimulate contractions and can be used during labor if contractions slow down.
  5. *Herbs – common herbs used are black and blue cohosh or tinctures including these herbs (these are contraindicated for mothers with high blood pressure) Some herbs are medicinal so please be sure to check with your primary provider or a licensed herbalist should you plan to take any herbs! See this site on herbs for information.
  6. Spicy Food - Some mothers say spicy food does the trick possibly because it may also stimulate digestion and thereby increase prostaglandin production to get contractions going.
  7. Massage - this is a great way to relax while your massage therapist stimulates trigger points for labor; often when stress hormones are reduced, labor can start more easily.
  8. *Glass of wine – although there is no evidence that wine stimulates contractions, it can help an anxious mom relax. Bear in mind that any alcohol affects your baby and can be dehydrating. Be sure to take only one glass with dinner and check with your provider before considering this way to start labor.
  9. Love-making/Intercourse/Orgasm – uses both oxytocin and prostaglandins to stimulate contractions and potentially induce labor. Do not have intercourse if your water has broken.
  10. Pineapple is considered to be a labor-inducing food, however there is no research that supports this method beyond women’s own stories.

I think I’ll just stick to the walking. I can just guess which one  Jay likes…

  • I’m thinking of you – hang in there! Katie was a full two weeks late, and then was only 6 and a half pounds. I had lots of Braxton-Hicks contractions. My mother would call every morning, “Haven’t you had that baby yet? Can’t you count?” – very helpful. J Jr will come when he is ready. Maybe you’ll have some time off of work to relax, sleep more and do little fun things to get ready for his coming home.
It would be good to get some nursing bras, even if it’s just 2 for now. The salespeople can help. The lactation people will want you wearing a firm bra in the hospital after delivery. I think there used to be a general rule about size; I bet it’s out there in Web land. You won’t be able to go shopping for a little while afterwards, anyway.

  • I told you Meg…pineapple juice…lol. The only other thing I recomend is the nipple stimulation. I would wait until your due date has come though. At that point Rufus should be done and ready. Evening primrose oil can soften the cervix a bit, but doesnt actually start labor. If at your next exam you can convince your doc to check your cervix using the liquid inside of EPO as a lubricant that can help.

  • HEY MEG, YOU NEED TO EAT SPICY (STEAMED CRABS) AND DANCE THE POLKA, THAT’S ALWAYS A SURE THING TO BRING ON LABOR.
